Joyful Noise -- Children's Choir
Coordinators: Gregg Schwartzkopf, Carol DeVine

The Children's Choir provides young people with an additional ministry for serving the congregation and learning the uses of liturgical music. We began in the fall of 1997 as an offshoot of the children's liturgies as a way to circumvent the difficulties of teaching songs for the services on short notice to sporadic volunteers. Joyful Noise allows interested participants to sing, have fun, participate at Mass, and learn the fundamentals of singing and the use of music to enhance the message of the scriptural readings. Meeting Time/Place: St. Augustine Rectory on Monday evenings 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Contact Persons: Gregg Schwartzkopf, Carol Devine, Julianna Miller. Upcoming Special Events:

Committee for Enhancement of the Liturgical Environment

The committee has as its goal the enhancement of St. Augustine's liturgical environment. Each liturgical season our members read up on environmental decorating studies prepared by liturgy experts, and attempt to apply various principles to the particular architecture of our church. We hope that our efforts not only add beauty to the church but also create an environment that brings the message of the gospel not just to our ears but also to all of our senses. The committee plans, selects, arranges, and schedules for the various liturgical celebrations. While some floral arrangements are purchased, the committee assembles most of the flowers and decorations. This enables St. Augustine's to purchase the loveliest flowers that are appropriate for the liturgy and to avoid the significant labor charges of professional florists who may not understand our liturgical purposes. The committee has approximately 8-10 permanent members. We can use more members, as well as alternates who could volunteer for particular tasks or celebrations. We seek members with artistic talent or organizational skills, or those who enjoy shopping or have cars. Meeting Time/Place: Flexible time 3 to 4 times yearly in the Rectory Contact Persons: Jane C Fisher, Sr. Ellen Glavey, Sr. Margaret Secour. Upcoming Special Events:

The Seamless Garment Ministry
Coordinator: Laura Norden

Shortly after Bishop Daily came to the Diocese of Brooklyn, he requested that a Respect Life group be formed in every parish. Thus was our Seamless Garment Ministry born. The term, Seamless Garment, first used by the late Cardinal Bernadin, covered all the varied attacks being made against the sanctity of human life--abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, capital punishment, violence in all its forms. As one of our parish ministries, our primary goal is to make known and spread Pope John Paul's "Gospel of Life." This has been done in a variety of ways through · bulletin notices of diocesan and parish pro-life activities · the distribution of posters, pamphlets, and prayer cards · messages in our weekly bulletin on life issues in the "Pastorally Speaking" column · holy hours dedicated to pro-life issues · parish attendance at the annual diocesan Sanctity of Life Mass and the Awards of the Pro-Vita prize · participation in political action through letters, postcards, and telephone calls to our legislators concerning pro-life issues To date, as you can see, the focus has been purely informational. For a truly complete ministry many other activities could be added. For this we need greater participation by our parishioners. Actually, this is a ministry in which each one of our parishioners must be involved on a personal level. It is a ministry of evangelization to which we are all bound by our acceptance of our Christian faith. Our parish can and should become dedicated messengers of the Gospel of Life, each in accordance with his/her own talents. At least (and probably most importantly) we can all pray daily for the success of these life issues. What better time is there to start this now?

Meeting Time/Place: There are no formal meetings. If this ministry grows beyond this informational stage into active participation among diocesan groups, meetings would be scheduled. Contact Persons: Laura Norden

Upcoming Special Events: We will continue to highlight annual Respect Life Sunday (month of October) and the Sanctity of Life Sunday (January), will request additional Holy Hour prayers, and will continue to watch legislation affecting pro-life issues in our state and federal governments for any necessary political action we should take. Hopefully, we may be able to present a lecture on these issues.
